Alice Austen House Museum

Artists-in-Residence for Emerging Photographers

Thanks to a generous grant from New York Community Trust, the Austen House is able to offer two emerging photographers the opportunity to develop their technical skills and aesthetic sensibility over the course of nine months.  It is our hope that the residency will launch a serious career.

During the nine months, the artist-in-residence will:

 

Have both the financial and instructive support to develop his or her own style and aesthetic sensibility

Identify career goals and a plan to achieve them

Become intimately familiar with the life and work of Alice Austen

Participate in all functions of a museum, including develop and curate exhibitions and education programs

Be able to exhibit work at the Austen House

Receive a stipend of $800 per month.

 

Eligibility

 

We are looking for:

 

College graduates, or candidates who can demonstrate the equivalence and maturity.

Candidates who are living on Staten Island, NY, or have a strong connection to the borough.

Photographers who are members of groups under-served by the museum community

Show Alice some love at our annual Valentine's Day Party at Da Noi 7:00 P.M. Dinner, dancing and celebrating the Alice Austen House! 138 Fingerboard Road Staten Island, NY 10305.  Reservations required.  $70 per person, couples and singles welcome!

February 25, 2012Volunteer Orientation: 2:00 - 4:00.  Tour the museum and learn about its architectural history.  Art discussion about Austen's Photographic exhibit.  Learn about volunteer opportunities and upcoming events.  Free refreshments served. 
March 01, 2012 Flipping Pages: Every first and last Friday of each month at 3:30PM  A story telling event for ages 4-8 years old; offering a calm and relaxing time.  Children will enjoy an illustrated story sitting on the front lawn of the Alice Austen House Museum “Clear Comfort” overlooking the Narrows.  If weather is not permitting, event will take place in the museum.  A short tour/art discussion to introduce your child to the museum and art making activity is included.  FREE! Reservations required.  (In March, the event will celebrate Women's History).

Beginner Adult Photography Workshop 11:30-1:30PM Learn the basics of digital photography and leave with some great photos.  If you don't have a camera, don't worry, we provide everything, individualized instruction will be given to those who bring their own cameras.  $40 fee includes prints and use of cameras!

2 - 4 PM Into to Photoshop Laptop required with Photoshop Elements installed (trial versions are available).  $35.00  Laptop rental fee $25.00

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day   12 noon to 3pm

Make your own pinhole camera

This is an international event created to promote and celebrate the art of pinhole photography. Share your photographs and cameras. On this unique day, we encourage people throughout the world to take some time off from the increasingly technological world we live in and to participate in the simple act of making a pinhole photograph and to share their visions and help spread the unusual beauty of this historical photographic process.

Carl Rutberg will be speaking at the event, all are welcome.  It is a time to celebrate women who have made and are making history.

Learn basic photography using our digital cameras and printers!  We will do self portraits, portraits, landscapes and Victorian dress vignettes as well as make your own pin hole cameras!

(A second session may be added August 6-10, 2012 if there are enough students) Cost $175 plus $10 registration fee

New teen program offers a range of opportunities to begin or continue to develop their knowledge of photography.  Includes digital photography, history, creative light painting, professional lighting & portfolio preparation with instructor Sara Signorelli.  Make art and new friends!

Cost $175 plus $10 registration fee
September 11, 2012The Alice Austen House Museum and the Fire Department Retirees of Staten Island will host the annual Remembrance of September 11 in honor of the 343 brothers who lost their lives. The ceremony will be held on the front lawn, overlooking the Manhattan skyline from 5 – 9 p.m.  The night will include a water display by New York City fire boat and complimentary refreshments and food.
