FAMILY
DEFINED: An aesthetic collaboration among Alice Austen, John
Naughton, Tri Huu Luu, and the public.
Throughout her life, Alice Austen lived in what is sometimes
referred to as a nontraditional family. Before her first birthday,
Alice's father abandoned her and mother and the two of them moved
into Clear Comfort, the Alice Austen House. There Alice grew up in
a large extended family that consisted of, besides her mother, her
grandparents, aunts, uncles, and maids. As she grew older her
family changed from the one she was born into to one consisting of
close friends. In 1917, when Austen was 51, Gertrude Tate moved
into Clear Comfort and the two formed a long lasting relationship.
We know this, not because Austen wrote it down, but because she
photographed it. Her images tell who her family was.
In addition to Austen, Tri Huu Luu and John Naughton will exhibit
photographs of other non-conventional families. Luu has spent years
photographing Buddhist monks throughout Asia, young men who leave
their traditional families to create new ones in monasteries.
Naughton has devoted much time to orphans in Pittsburgh. Young
children, living in foster homes, waiting to be adopted, waiting to
find and create their families.
To ensure the success of this exhibit and to ensure that we are able
to define the family, we ask all of you to contribute. Please bring
photos of your family to the Austen House and we will include as
many as possible in the exhibit. Is your family your spouse, child,
parent, lover, friend? Is your cat your family? Tell us, or more
precisely, show us.
This exhibition has been made possible by a generous grant from the
Council of the Art and Humanities on Staten Island
